Blue Division

1941–1943 · 20th century · Also known as División Azul, 250th Infantry Division

The Blue Division was a unit of Spanish volunteers, mostly Falangists and army men, that fought for Nazi Germany on the Eastern Front as the 250th Infantry Division of the Wehrmacht. Sent by Franco in 1941 after the German invasion of the Soviet Union, some 45,000 men served in it, chiefly on the Leningrad front. Under Allied pressure it was withdrawn in late 1943, though a smaller Blue Legion stayed until early 1944.
