Blue Mosque of Tabriz

1465 · 15th century · Also known as Goy Masjid

The Blue Mosque of Tabriz, or Goy Masjid, is a mosque in Tabriz, north-western Iran, completed in 1465 during the reign of the Qara Qoyunlu ruler Jahan Shah. It was famed for the blue tile mosaic that covered its walls and domes. Badly damaged by an earthquake in 1780, it lay largely in ruins until restoration in the 20th century, which preserved surviving panels of the original tilework.
