Qara Iskander

d. 1438 · 15th century · Also known as Qara Iskandar

Qara Iskander was ruler of the Qara Qoyunlu Turkmen confederation from 1420, after the death of his father Qara Yusuf. He held Azerbaijan and eastern Anatolia from Tabriz but was repeatedly defeated by the Timurid ruler Shah Rukh, who campaigned against him in 1421, 1429 and 1434–1435 and set up his brother Jahan Shah as a rival. Driven from his lands, he was killed in 1438 by his own son Shah Qubad.
