Burana Tower

11th century · 11th century

The Burana Tower is a brick minaret in the Chuy Valley near Tokmok in northern Kyrgyzstan, built in the eleventh century under the Kara-Khanids. It stands on the site of a medieval town usually identified with Balasagun, one of the dynasty's capitals. Originally around 40 metres high, it was cut to about 25 metres by earthquakes and has been partly restored. Stone grave figures (balbals) are gathered at the site.
