Caravaggio

1571–1610 · 16th century · Also known as Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio

Caravaggio, born Michelangelo Merisi, was an Italian painter whose dramatic realism and strong contrasts of light and shadow transformed European painting around 1600. Working in Rome from the 1590s, he painted works such as The Calling of Saint Matthew. After killing a man in 1606 he fled to Naples, Malta and Sicily, and he died at Porto Ercole in 1610.
