Charterhouse of Champmol

1383–1791 · 14th century

The Charterhouse of Champmol was a Carthusian monastery outside Dijon, founded in 1383 by Philip the Bold as the burial place of the Valois dukes of Burgundy. The dukes commissioned works there from Claus Sluter, Melchior Broederlam and Jean de Marville, including the ducal tombs and the Well of Moses. The monastery was destroyed after the Revolution; the tombs are now in the museum of Dijon.
