Claus Sluter

c. 1350–1405/06 · 10th century

Claus Sluter was a Dutch sculptor from Haarlem who worked in Dijon from 1385 for Duke Philip the Bold of Burgundy. His figures for the portal of the Charterhouse of Champmol and the Well of Moses, with their weight, movement and realistic faces, broke with the elegant International Gothic and shaped northern European sculpture. He also began the duke's tomb, completed after his death in 1405 or 1406.
