Claus von Stauffenberg

1907–1944 · 20th century

Claus von Stauffenberg was a German army officer who led the 20 July plot of 1944 against Hitler. Badly wounded in North Africa, he became chief of staff of the Replacement Army and placed a bomb in a briefcase at a conference at Hitler's Wolf's Lair headquarters in East Prussia. Hitler survived, the coup in Berlin collapsed, and Stauffenberg was shot that night.
