Well of Moses

1395–1405 · 14th century

The Well of Moses is a monumental sculpture by Claus Sluter and his workshop, made in 1395–1405 for the cloister of the Charterhouse of Champmol near Dijon. Its hexagonal base, carved with six life-size Old Testament prophets led by Moses, once supported a Calvary group, of which only fragments survive. It is a masterpiece of late medieval realism.
