Congo people (Liberia)

Also known as Congoes

In Liberia, Congo people, or Congoes, were the Africans freed from slave ships by the United States Navy and settled in Liberia in the 19th century, many of them originally taken from the Congo region. They merged largely with the Americo-Liberian elite, and in Liberian usage the name later came to mean all descendants of the settlers.
