Constantine I of Greece

1868–1923 · 20th century

Constantine I was King of Greece from 1913 to 1917 and from 1920 to 1922. A successful commander in the Balkan Wars, he insisted on neutrality in the First World War, which brought him into conflict with Eleftherios Venizelos and led to the National Schism. Forced out in 1917, he returned after an election in 1920 but abdicated again after the defeat in Asia Minor in 1922.
