Decebalus

d. 106 CE · 1st century

Decebalus was king of Dacia from 87 to 106 CE. He destroyed the Roman army of Cornelius Fuscus and in 89 CE won a favourable peace from Domitian, with Roman subsidies and engineers. Trajan's two Dacian Wars of 101–102 and 105–106 CE destroyed his kingdom; when his capital Sarmizegetusa fell he killed himself rather than be captured, and Dacia became a Roman province.
