Decree of Aristoteles

378/377 BCE · 4th century BCE

The Decree of Aristoteles is an Athenian inscription of 378/377 BCE, proposed by a certain Aristoteles, that sets out the founding terms of the Second Athenian League. It invites Greeks and non-Greeks not ruled by the Persian king to join an alliance so that the Spartans may allow the Greeks to be free, promising members autonomy, no garrisons and no tribute. The stone also lists the member states, among them Chios, Thebes and Byzantium.
