Divya Upadesh

c. 1775 · 18th century

The Divya Upadesh ("Divine Counsel") is the set of final political teachings of Prithvi Narayan Shah, the founder of unified Nepal, delivered to his courtiers at Nuwakot shortly before his death in 1775 and recorded by them. It describes Nepal as "a yam between two boulders", China and British India, urges caution towards both, and gives advice on defence, the army, trade and the encouragement of home industry.
