Diwan Lughat al-Turk

1070s · 11th century · Also known as Compendium of the Languages of the Turks

The Diwan Lughat al-Turk ('Compendium of the Languages of the Turks') is a dictionary of the Turkic languages written in Arabic by Mahmud al-Kashgari, a member of the Kara-Khanid dynasty, in Baghdad in the 1070s. Besides words, it records Turkic poetry, proverbs, tribes and customs, and includes a round map of the Turkic world. Known from a single manuscript found in Istanbul in the early twentieth century, it is a basic source for early Turkic culture.
