1563 · 16th century · Also known as Victoria de Durango

Durango, officially Victoria de Durango, is a city in north-western Mexico, capital of the state of Durango. It was founded in 1563 by Francisco de Ibarra as the capital of the province of Nueva Vizcaya, named after his native Biscay, and lies beside the Cerro de Mercado, a large hill of iron ore. Its colonial cathedral and the surrounding desert landscapes, used in many Western films, are well known.
