Elberfeld

Elberfeld is a former town in the Wupper valley of western Germany, joined with Barmen and neighbouring towns in 1929 to form the city later named Wuppertal. A centre of linen bleaching and then of textiles and dyeing from the sixteenth century, it was one of the first industrial towns of Germany and in the 1850s gave its name to the Elberfeld system of poor relief.
