Eleusis

Also known as Elefsina

Eleusis is an ancient town in Attica, about 18 kilometres north-west of Athens, now called Elefsina. It was home to the sanctuary of Demeter and Persephone where the Eleusinian Mysteries, the most famous secret religious rites of the Greek world, were celebrated for many centuries. The Costoboci sacked the sanctuary around 170 CE, and the emperor Marcus Aurelius paid for its restoration.
