Eleusinian Mysteries

The Eleusinian Mysteries were the secret initiation rites of Demeter and her daughter Persephone, or Kore, held each year at Eleusis in Attica under the supervision of Athens. Initiates walked in procession from Athens along the Sacred Way and were promised a better fate after death. The rites drew people from across the Greek and Roman world until the sanctuary was abandoned at the end of the fourth century CE.
