Emperor Bing of Song

1272–1279 · 13th century · Also known as Zhao Bing

Emperor Bing of Song, personal name Zhao Bing, was the last emperor of the Song dynasty, enthroned as a child in 1278 by loyalists fleeing the Mongols along the southern coast. When the Yuan fleet destroyed the Song navy at Yamen in March 1279, the minister Lu Xiufu leapt into the sea with the seven-year-old emperor on his back, and both drowned, ending the dynasty.
