Ems
The Ems is a river of north-western Germany, about 370 km long, rising in the Senne near Paderborn and flowing north through Westphalia and Lower Saxony to the Dollart estuary and the North Sea near Emden. In Roman times the Bructeri, Frisii and Chauci lived along it, and in the Middle Ages it divided East Frisia from the Frisian lands to the west. The Dollart forms part of the German–Dutch border.
