Falerii Novi

241 BCE · 3rd century BCE

Falerii Novi was the new town founded on open ground after Rome destroyed the Faliscan hill city of Falerii in 241 BCE and moved its inhabitants there. It lies near Fabrica di Roma in northern Lazio, and its circuit of walls, over 2 km long with dozens of towers and the gate known as the Porta di Giove, survives almost complete. The town declined in the early Middle Ages, leaving the Romanesque church of Santa Maria di Falleri within its walls.
