Farshut
Farshut is a town in Qena Governorate in Upper Egypt, near the Nile bend at Nag Hammadi. In the 17th and 18th centuries it was the seat of the Hawwara Arab sheikhs, who ruled much of Upper Egypt as tax farmers under Ottoman Egypt and reached their height under Shaykh Hammam ibn Yusuf. Their power collapsed in 1769, when the forces of Ali Bey al-Kabir defeated them.
