Qena
Qena is a city in Upper Egypt on the east bank of the Nile, capital of Qena Governorate and close to the temple of Dendera. It stands where the shortest route from the Nile to the Red Sea leaves the valley and was long a centre of trade and pilgrim traffic. In the 18th century the region was dominated by the Hawwara sheikhs of Farshut.
