Free Officers Movement (Egypt)

1949–1952 · 20th century

The Free Officers Movement was a secret group of young Egyptian army officers, led by Gamal Abdel Nasser with General Muhammad Naguib as its figurehead. Embittered by defeat in the 1948 war and by royal corruption, they seized power on 23 July 1952, forced King Farouk to abdicate and in 1953 abolished the monarchy, ruling through a Revolutionary Command Council.
