French conquest of Bornu
The French conquest of Bornu in 1900 followed the defeat and death of the warlord Rabih az-Zubayr, who had seized Bornu in 1893. French control of the region accelerated the advance into the central Sahel and brought France into direct confrontation with the Wadai Empire.
