Fucine Lake

Also known as Lake Fucinus, Lago Fucino

The Fucine Lake was a large lake in the central Apennines of Abruzzo, Italy, around which the Marsi lived. Its uncontrolled floods prompted the emperor Claudius to cut a drainage tunnel in the 1st century CE, though the lake was fully drained only in the 19th century under Prince Alessandro Torlonia. Its former bed is now a fertile plain.
