Gaurinath Singha

r. 1780–1795 · 18th century

Gaurinath Singha was king of the Ahom kingdom of Assam from 1780 to 1795, in the worst years of the Moamoria rebellion. Driven from his capital by the rebels, he fled to Guwahati and in 1792 asked the British East India Company for help; a small force under Captain Thomas Welsh restored his authority before being recalled in 1794. In the same year he moved the capital from Rangpur to Jorhat.
