1900–1971 · 20th century · Also known as Giorgos Seferis

George Seferis, born Giorgos Seferiadis near Smyrna, was a Greek poet and diplomat. His collections, beginning with Strophe in 1931, combined modernist technique with Greek history and myth and the experience of the lost Greek world of Asia Minor. In 1963 he became the first Greek to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, and in 1969 he publicly condemned the military junta.
