Gia Định
Gia Định was the name of the Vietnamese settlement and citadel on the site of present-day Ho Chi Minh City, and of the surrounding province of southern Vietnam. Nguyen Anh took it from the Tây Sơn in 1788 and made it his base for the reconquest of the country. A French-designed citadel was built there in 1790, and the French captured it in 1859, making Saigon the capital of Cochinchina.
