Giorgione

c. 1477–1510 · 15th century · Also known as Giorgio da Castelfranco

Giorgione was a Venetian painter of the High Renaissance from Castelfranco Veneto. Very few works are securely attributed to him, among them The Tempest and the Castelfranco altarpiece, but his poetic landscapes, soft modelling and enigmatic subjects transformed Venetian painting. He worked with the young Titian on the frescoes of the Fondaco dei Tedeschi and died of plague in Venice.
