Fondaco dei Tedeschi

The Fondaco dei Tedeschi is a large building beside the Rialto Bridge in Venice that served from the 13th century as the headquarters, warehouse and lodging of German merchants, who were required to live and trade there under Venetian supervision. After a fire it was rebuilt in 1505–1508, with exterior frescoes by Giorgione and Titian. It symbolised Venice's role as intermediary between the Levant and central Europe.
