Fon people
The Fon are a Gbe-speaking people of southern Benin, living mainly on the Abomey plateau and around Cotonou. They formed the core population of the Kingdom of Dahomey, which rose from the early 17th century and became a major power in the Atlantic slave trade. Their language, Fon or Fongbe, is the most widely spoken in Benin, and their Vodun religion influenced Haitian Vodou.
