Giovanni Bellini

c. 1430–1516 · 15th century

Giovanni Bellini was a Venetian painter who, more than anyone, made Venice a leading centre of Renaissance art. His altarpieces, such as the San Zaccaria Altarpiece, and his many Madonnas used oil paint, rich colour and natural light in new ways. He ran a busy workshop, became official painter to the republic, and taught or influenced Giorgione and Titian.
