Giray dynasty

c. 1441–1783 · 15th century · Also known as House of Giray, Girays

The Giray dynasty was the ruling house of the Crimean Khanate from its foundation around 1441 until the Russian annexation in 1783. Descended from Genghis Khan through Jochi's son Tuqa-Timur, the Girays enjoyed great prestige in the steppe and Islamic worlds; under Ottoman suzerainty from 1478 the sultans chose and deposed khans from among them. Members of the house also ruled Kazan.
