Glele

d. 1889 · 19th century · Also known as Glèlè

Glele was king of Dahomey from 1858 to 1889, succeeding his father Ghezo. He continued Dahomey's yearly wars and slave raids against the Yoruba, destroying Ketu in 1886, and maintained the annual customs with their human sacrifices. Late in his reign he clashed with France over Cotonou, and he died in 1889 as the conflict that led to the French conquest of Dahomey began.
