Gulf of Izmir
The Gulf of Izmir is an inlet of the Aegean Sea on the west coast of Turkey, reaching far inland, with the city of Izmir, ancient Smyrna, at its head. Its sheltered waters made Smyrna one of the chief ports of the eastern Mediterranean from antiquity to the Ottoman period. The Gediz, the ancient Hermus, enters the gulf on its northern shore.
