Hadewijch

fl. 13th century · 13th century

Hadewijch was a Brabantine mystic and poet of the thirteenth century, probably a beguine living in or near Antwerp or Brussels. Her visions, letters and poems in Middle Dutch describe the soul's love for God in the language of courtly love, minne. Rediscovered in the nineteenth century, her work is counted among the masterpieces of medieval Dutch literature and of Christian mysticism.
