Bergen op Zoom

Bergen op Zoom is a city in North Brabant, in the southern Netherlands, near the Scheldt estuary. In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries its two annual fairs, together with those of Antwerp, formed the leading commercial market of the Low Countries. A strongly fortified town, it withstood Spanish sieges in 1588 and 1622 but was taken by the French in 1747.
