Hamdullahi

c. 1820–1864 · 19th century

Hamdullahi, the House of Praise, was the capital of the Massina Empire in the inner Niger delta of present-day Mali. It was founded around 1820 by Seku Amadu after his jihad against the Fulbe chiefs and their Bambara overlords, and was laid out as a planned Islamic city with a great mosque and a ruling council. El Hadj Umar Tall captured it in 1862, and it was ruined in the fighting of 1864.
