A son of Amangkurat IV, he rebelled against his brother Pakubuwana II and the Dutch East India Company in 1746, and the Treaty of Giyanti of 1755 divided Mataram between him and Pakubuwana III. He built the kraton of Yogyakarta and ruled until his death in 1792.
