Haw Phra Kaew

1565 · 16th century

Haw Phra Kaew is a temple in Vientiane, Laos, built by King Setthathirath around 1565 to house the Emerald Buddha, which he had brought from Lan Na. The Siamese took the image to Thailand in 1779, and the temple was destroyed in the sack of Vientiane in 1828. Rebuilt between 1936 and 1942, it now serves as a museum of Buddhist art.
