Hippodamus of Miletus

5th century BCE · 5th century BCE · Also known as Hippodamus

Hippodamus of Miletus was a Greek architect and political thinker of the 5th century BCE, regarded in antiquity as the father of town planning. His name became attached to the grid plan of straight streets crossing at right angles, used in the rebuilding of Miletus after 479 BCE. He laid out the Piraeus, the port of Athens, and Greek tradition linked him to the plan of the colony of Thurii in southern Italy.
