Holy Cross Abbey, Donauwörth

11th century · 11th century · Also known as Heilig Kreuz Abbey

Holy Cross Abbey in Donauwörth, Bavaria, was a monastery founded in the early 11th century by the lords of Werd to house a relic of the True Cross brought from Constantinople, and a Benedictine abbey from around 1100. It remained Catholic when most of the town became Lutheran, and the clash over its procession in 1606 led to the town's imperial ban and seizure by Bavaria. Its baroque church was rebuilt in the early 18th century.
