Inferno (Dante)
Inferno is the first part of Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, written in the early 14th century. It describes Dante's journey, guided by the Roman poet Virgil, through the nine circles of Hell, where he meets sinners from history and from the Italian politics of his day. Among its best-known episodes is the story of the lovers Francesca da Rimini and Paolo Malatesta in the fifth canto.
