Inflation and currency debasement
Inflation and currency debasement is a recurring pattern in which rulers reduce the precious-metal content of coins or over-issue paper money to meet expenses, leading to rising prices and loss of confidence. It can damage commerce, impoverish fixed-income groups and undermine state finances. Examples include the Yuan Dynasty, the Spanish Empire, the Tokugawa Shogunate and the Byzantine Empire.
