Íñigo López Ezquerra

fl. c. 1040 · 11th century

Íñigo López Ezquerra was the first recorded lord or count of Biscay, appearing in documents from about 1040 as a vassal of the kings of Navarre. He founded the line later known as the López de Haro, which held the lordship of Biscay for more than three centuries. Through this family Biscay developed as a distinct lordship with its own customs and assemblies before passing to the Crown of Castile.
