Íñigo Arista

c. 790–851 · 9th century · Also known as Eneko Arista, Íñigo Íñiguez

Íñigo Arista was the first king of Pamplona, the kingdom later known as Navarre. A Basque leader, he took power around 824 after the Basques defeated a Frankish army at the second Battle of Roncevaux, ending Carolingian control. He was allied by kinship with the Muslim Banu Qasi of the Ebro valley, since his mother had married into the family, making Musa ibn Musa his half-brother. His dynasty ruled Pamplona until 905.
