Itzamnaaj B'ahlam III

r. 681–742 · 8th century · Also known as Shield Jaguar the Great

Itzamnaaj B'ahlam III, known as Shield Jaguar the Great, was king of the Maya city of Yaxchilan from 681 to 742. During his long reign the city reached its greatest power, and he commissioned many buildings and carved lintels, among them the lintels of Structure 23 dedicated to his wife Lady K'abal Xook, which show royal bloodletting. He died in 742 at a great age.
