Usumacinta River
The Usumacinta River rises in the highlands of Guatemala and flows north-west to the Gulf of Mexico, for much of its course forming the border between Mexico and Guatemala. In the Classic period it was a major trade route of the Maya world, lined by rival kingdoms such as Yaxchilan and Piedras Negras. It is the largest river in Mesoamerica by volume.
